Police seize 28 kg of smuggled opium

Police in Southwest China's Yunnan province captured a suspected drug trafficker on March 10 and seized 10 bags of opium weighing 28 kg, local authorities said. Police were alerted to the smuggling plan on March 8, prompting officers in Tengchong to set up a task force to investigate the case. Yunnan is a major front line in China's battle against drug crime, as it borders the Golden Triangle, which is known for its rampant drug production and trafficking.

Guide for compulsory education evaluation

Chinese authorities have issued a guideline on the evaluation of the quality of the country's compulsory education in a bid to promote students' well-rounded development, an education official announced on Thursday. The document, jointly issued by the Ministry of Education and five other Party and government authorities, aims to rid the education sector of its obsession with scores, enrollment rates, academic diplomas, papers and titles, Lyu Yugang, head of the ministry's basic education department, told a news conference. The document says evaluations will take note of the local education environment, the quality of education at schools and the quality of students' development.

Space program exhibition begins

An interactive exhibition on the development of China's manned space program opened to the public on Thursday at the China Science and Technology Museum in Beijing. Co-hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology and the China Manned Space Engineering Office, the Fly to Space exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and allows visitors to experience the excitement of space flight. It features displays on the work of astronauts, plus themed exhibits on a time tunnel and living in space. Interactive technologies, including virtual reality and 3D displays, allow visitors to understand the development of the country's manned space program, experience the selection and training of astronauts and learn about the launch of a spacecraft and life in orbit.
