BEIJING

China has 36,000 km of high-speed railways

China's railway network had a total length of 141,400 kilometers by the end of last month, of which 36,000 km were high-speed railways, the national railway operator said on Saturday. The country invested 67.1 billion yuan ($9.67 billion) in rail fixed assets in July, up 3.6 percent year-on-year, China Railway Corp said in a statement posted on its website. During the first seven months of this year, 1,310 km of new railway lines were put into service, including 733 km of high-speed railway, the statement said.

2.8 million coupons offered to lift spending

Beijing began offering 2.8 million coupons on Saturday in the latest move to spur consumption following the COVID-19 pandemic, the capital's commerce bureau said. Two million of the coupons, available on the app of e-commerce giant JD, can be redeemed at participating restaurants and retailers in Beijing, and 800,000 can be used to buy products equipped with smart technologies. Half the coupons were available on Saturday, and the rest will be issued on Aug 18.

YUNNAN

30 kg of heroin seized, 3 suspects detained

Three suspects were captured with 30 kilograms of heroin recently in Yunnan province, local police said on Sunday. After receiving a tip that drug dealers were planning to traffic drugs from Kunming, capital of Yunnan, to the city of Zhaotong, police in Zhaotong dispatched a task force to investigate the case. At around 7 am on Aug 2, police nabbed three suspects in Qiaojia county and seized 30 kg of heroin in a suitcase. The three suspects have been detained.

QINGHAI

Rare mountain cats spotted in Qilian park

Infrared cameras have captured rare footage of Chinese mountain cats in Qilian Mountain National Park, the park administration said. The cameras recorded five Chinese mountain cats-a female and four cubs-on scrubland at an altitude of around 3,000 meters. Also known as the Chinese desert cat, the animal is under second-class national protection.
