Man accused of slashing 6 in Shanghai knife attack to undergo mental evaluation

A man whose family claimed he had recently experienced hallucinations and symptoms of illusion slashed six people with a knife in downtown Shanghai on Wednesday night, local police said on Thursday. Ten people were injured in the incident but none of the wounds were life-threatening.
The suspect, surnamed Shen, 39, was driving a car with his mother and girlfriend on board when it collided into a non-motorized vehicle and two motor vehicles at an intersection in Xuhui district, causing injuries to three people.
He got out of the car and hurt his girlfriend and five passers-by with a knife and beat another passer-by. Shen was detained by police on site.
His family said that he did not suffer from mental illness but was absent-minded and behaved abnormally lately. Police excluded the possibility Shen was driving drunk or was driving under the influence of drugs. He will undergo a mental evaluation.
