US-listed smart wearable devices maker Huami Corp unveiled its latest chip, as the company established an AI research institute to beef up its technological prowess.

At the same time, Huami also unveiled a partnership with the renowned Chinese respiratory expert Zhong Nanshan's team on developing smart watches, which may help with recovered COVID-19 patients' follow-up care and management.

At its AI Innovation Conference held in Hefei, Anhui province, Huami unveiled its Huangshan 2 chips, nearly two years after the first generation of the self-developed chip from Huami.

The chip will power the company's upcoming smart wearables and was developed by the company's chip research and development department based on the RISC-V instruction set. RISC-V is an open-source chip architecture.

Huang Wang, founder and CEO of Huami, said the updated chip is expected to go into mass production in the fourth quarter of this year. The new products using the chip will hit the market in the first half of next year.
