Education chief: Classes to resume in HK as planned

HONG KONG – Schools will resume classes in phases as planned despite the city recorded two new local cases of coronavirus, ending a 23-day streak of no locally transmitted cases of COVID-19 caused by a novel coronavirus.

riefing the press after a meeting of the Legislative Council on Wednesday, Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung Yun-hung said a guideline to facilitate the resumption of classes will be issued to all schools later on Wednesday.

Admitting that the pandemic situation is unstable now, the education chief said the Education Bureau would wait for the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health to follow up on the new cases to decide whether it should shelve the plan for class resumption.

According to the current plan, all of the city's kindergarten, primary and secondary students, except those in Kindergarten 1 and 2, will gradually return to schools for this school year from May 27 to June 15.

The guideline will include detailed instructions on anti-infection measures, such as half-day classes and keeping students at appropriate distance, he added.
