Tear gas was fired at stone-throwing migrants from Turkey at the border-crossing near the Greek town of Kastanies.
The surge at the border comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Friday that the country would no longer stop refugees from attempting to reach Europe.
Greece has currently suspended any new asylum applications for the next month.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Greece had increased "the level of deterrence" at the border to maximum.
