Lanzhou sets up disposal areas for used masks


Trash cans to collect discarded facial masks have been set up in residential communities of Lanzhou, Gansu province, which helps sort used masks to prevent potential infections, according to a statement from the government.
Since Jan 29, the leading group for fighting the novel coronavirus of Lanzhou city has required administrative departments at all levels to set up special containers to collect used facial masks near residential areas and other public places.
The trash cans will collect personal protective equipment such as masks, protective clothing, eyepieces, boots and gloves, and also temperature measuring containers, disinfection drugs and equipment such as disinfection materials, medical waste packaging materials and other items.
The notice issued by the leading group also required related authorities to process collected used facial masks and other household medical equipment quickly to prevent potential infections.
It also added there should be strengthened standards to process the disposal of personal protective equipment, such as facial masks. All areas should strengthen the disinfecting of household garbage collection and transportation.
As of Jan 29, 18 centralized medical waste disposal facilities have been in operation in 14 cities and states of the province, with 23.14 tons of medical waste disposed of centrally and 233.05 tons of medical waste disposed of in total.
