700 captive-bred Chinese sturgeons released into Yangtze River

Altogether 700 captive-bred Chinese sturgeons were released Saturday into the Yangtze River. This is the 61st release by the Chinese Sturgeon Research Institute of China Three Gorges Corp., which has introduced about 6 million sturgeons to the wild since the 1980s. Believed to have lived at the same time as dinosaurs, the Chinese sturgeon has existed for more than 140 million years. The fish is under top national protection. [Photo/Xinhua]

WUHAN - A total of 700 Chinese sturgeons were released on Saturday into the country's longest river, the Yangtze River, to save the species from extinction.

The 700 captive-bred sturgeons, nicknamed "aquatic pandas," were released in the city of Yichang, Central China's Hubei province, by the Chinese Sturgeon Research Institute (CSRI) of the China Three Gorges Corporation.
