NEW DELHI: Four persons were killed and more than 40 others injured in two separate rail mishaps in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh Saturday morning, due to dense fog which has enveloped several parts of northern India, a senior police official said.

"In the first accident, four passengers were killed and 40 injured when the Bhiwani-Gorakhpur Gorakhdham Express rammed into the stationary Prayagraj Express near the state's Kanpur district at 09:00 a.m. local time. The driver of the express train failed to see the stationary train as visibility was very poor due to dense fog. The injured have been admitted to a hospital," the official said.

Meanwhile, quoting railway sources, TV channels have been reporting that senior leader of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and former Indian Minister, Murli Manohar Joshi, who was traveling to Allahabad on the Prayagraj Express, escaped unhurt.

In a related incident, the Bihar-bound Lichavi Express hit the stationary Magadh Express at Saraibhopat near Etawah an hour earlier.

"Though it is being said that the driver of Lichavi Express has been killed in the mishap, we have no confirmation about this. We know that he has been admitted to a local hospital where his condition is said to be serious," the official said.

Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railways Rajesh Dutt Bajpai told the media that a relief team has been rushed to the site and a probe has also been ordered into the mishap.

Fog-related railway mishaps have been common in India, particularly in winter.
