Five people were injured in the accident late Thursday near the town of Kota, 170 miles (270 kilometers) west of state capital Jaipur, said Rajeev Dasot, the area's inspector general of police.

About 48 people were working on the bridge over the Chambal River when it collapsed. Nearly three dozen people are missing, and many are feared trapped under debris. Dasot said a rescue team of divers was searching the river Friday.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident and two engineers working on the project were being questioned, he said.
