Former Spanish national coach Jose Antonio Camacho has been rumored as the new head coach of the Chinese men's national soccer team, replacing the incumbent domestic coach Gao Hongbo, Xinhua reports.

The report said Chinese Football Association (CFA) officials, led by CFA's deputy chief Yu Hongchen, had held talks with Camacho and its agent in Madrid last week and Camacho is positively considering the offer.

Camacho, who would shoulder the Chinese hopes to make the 2014 Brazil World Cup finals, is expected to meet the national team for the first time in the southern Chinese city of Kunming on August 22, eleven days before China's Asian Zone qualifying round with Singapore, according to the report.

But there has been no official confirmation of Camacho's appointment.

Camacho coached Spain from 1998 to 2002 when the current European and world champion advanced to the quarterfinals of both Euro 2000 and 2002 World Cups.

The former Real Madrid and Benfica coach was fired from Osasuna when the Spanish side was battling relegation in February.
