The planned Houpu Hydrogen Energy Equipment Industrial Park – to cost 10 billion yuan ($1.49 billion) – started construction on June 16 in the Xindu district of Chengdu, capital city of Southwest China's Sichuan province.

The project – being funded by Houpu Clean Energy Co Ltd, a leading player in the construction of hydrogen refueling stations – will be conducted over two phases. The first phase will involve capital expenditure of 2.4 billion yuan and the second will involve capex of 7.6 billion yuan.

The result will be a fully operational hydrogen refueling station intelligent equipment production base, a low-pressure solid-state hydrogen storage equipment base, a hydrogen energy compression equipment base and an air-compression pump base for fuel cells.

The goal is to build a leading international hydrogen energy equipment industry cluster and hydrogen energy applications ecosystem.

As a key step in the path to Xindu's construction of a full-scale hydrogen energy industrial supply chain, it's envisaged that the project will effectively promote the development of a hydrogen energy cluster in the district. It's also expected to inject strong momentum into the economic development of Xindu, according to local officials.

Within the guidelines of the country's carbon peak and carbon neutrality targets, Xindu has established cooperation with research institutions, universities and colleges and enterprises. The goal is to create a forward-looking layout for the hydrogen energy industry – as well as provide invaluable application scenarios and a broad market space for the development of the hydrogen energy industry.

Based on the industrial park, plans are for the district to attract more advanced enterprises and "hidden-champions". Plans are also to promote the green and low-carbon transformation of the energy system for Chengdu and help the city become a national demonstration city for carbon peak and carbon neutrality, officials said.
