Boehringer Ingelheim – one of the world's biggest pharmaceuticals companies – signed an agreement online on Nov 7 to invest in a major rehabilitation project in Chengdu Medical City, located in the Wenjiang district of Chengdu, capital city of Southwest China's Sichuan province.

A leading player in the development and production of drugs for the treatment of strokes, the German pharma giant plans to build its second Consanas Rehabilitation center in China at the Chengdu Medical City, following the first one jointly developed with the Shanghai International Medical Center in 2018.

Under the agreement, the rehabilitation center will have an area of 13,500 square meters and will have about 150 beds. The facility will focus on neural rehabilitation, with stroke rehabilitation as its main sphere of operation.

Plans are for it to introduce German standard rehabilitation therapy and the world's top rehabilitation technology into China – as well as Boehringer Ingelheim's solutions for stroke – providing patients with "German gold standard" health management services.

It's understood that its world-class health management services will adopt treatment methods such as group therapy, speech therapy, art therapy, hierarchical assessment and standardized rehabilitation therapy – and will match innovative treatment methods according to the needs of Chinese rehabilitation patients.

Boehringer Ingelheim will also introduce its Consanas Rehabilitation Internet Hospital to the Chengdu project, as an extension of the on-site rehabilitation center.

The internet hospital will provide online consultation for patients with mild and moderate strokes, as well as offer stroke patients support and guidance for home-based rehabilitation via digital means.

Wenjiang district is home to more than 500 companies in the fields of medical science, pharmaceuticals and medical care, whose total revenue has maintained annual growth of more than 20 percent for several consecutive years. It also has two national key laboratories and seven national R&D centers for medical science, pharmaceuticals and medical care.

The district is targeting its comprehensive development as a medical and health industrial cluster – with the goal of being home to 1,000 enterprises by 2026, whose total revenue tops 60 billion yuan ($9.4 billion) annually.
