Shanghai’s invention patent ownership per 10,000 of population ranks 2nd in 2018

Shanghai recorded a patent application growth of 14.03 percent and a patent licensing increase of 27 percent in 2018, reaching 150,233 and 92,460 respectively, official data released by the Shanghai municipal government at a news conference revealed on April 23.
The application amount and licensing amount of invention patents were 62,755 and 21,331, with a year-on-year growth of 14.87 percent and 3.14 percent, respectively. PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) applications in 2018 numbered 2,500 and increased by 19.05 percent year-on-year.
By the end of 2018, the number of valid invention patents had grown 14.47 percent year-on-year to 114,966 in Shanghai, and the invention patent ownership per 10,000 of population has reached 47.5 (calculated according to the permanent population of 24.183 million), ranking second among provinces in China.
The trademark application of Shanghai reached 408,900, up 18.9 percent year-on-year, and there were 291,700 new registered trademarks, with a year-on-year growth of 51.4 percent. By the end of 2018, a total of 1,149,300 valid trademarks had been registered in Shanghai, an increase of 30.8 percent year-on-year. The registration number of copyrights grew 11.5 percent year-on-year to 261,642, and included the first copyright registration of acrobatic works.
