An institute specializing in AI satellite research was recently established at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), the first of its kind in China.

Xu Yangsheng, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, was appointed as honorary president and director of the academic committee.

The institute was jointly established by UESTC, Galaxy Holding Group, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and ADA-Space, a private firm in Chengdu specializing in satellite design and data services.

During the preparation period for the institute's establishment, three space missions have been successfully developed and completed, launching six satellites, according to Zeng Yong, president of UESTC.

Zeng hopes that the institute will make breakthroughs in the research, development, and industrialization of key generic satellite technology at an early date, and thus become a domestic leader in satellite research, an incubation platform for innovative enterprises and space industry, and a base to bring in and cultivate highly skilled talent.

The institute aims to build a space-based network system consisting of low-orbit AI satellites, providing real-time coverage of communication and high-speed networks to any person or object in the world, centimeter-level location and navigation enhancement services, as well as high-altitude resolution Earth observation and imaging services.
