Chengdu to host 2021 Summer Universiade
Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, has officially been selected to host the 2021 Summer Universiade, an international university sporting and cultural event held every two years.
The city signed a contract with the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and the Federation of University Sports of China (FUSC) on Friday during a FISU Executive Committee meeting held one day before the opening ceremony for the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, which will be held from March 2 to 12.
The 2021 Summer Universiade will take place in August 2021. More than 10,000 athletes and officials from around 170 countries and regions across the globe are expected to gather in Chengdu to compete in 18 sporting events, including basketball, volleyball, track and field, and swimming.
Chengdu will be the third city on the Chinese mainland to host the Universiade Summer Games, after Beijing and Shenzhen.
Chengdu has already started preparation work for the event. Local officials said the city is determined to make the 2021 Summer Universiade a dynamic, creative, exciting, and memorable sporting event.
