Anju ancient town in Tongliang district of Chongqing is rejuvenating itself as a cultural tourism destination with unique cultural resources, drawing more than 3.4 million domestic and overseas visitors generating 1.62 billion yuan ($2.36 billion) in total tourism revenue last year.

With a rich history that goes back 20,000 years ago when humans first arrived, Anji ancient town was a thriving town where merchants and literati lived as early as 1,500 years ago. Nowadays, it has become a good place for leisure tourism. The ancient city is surrounded by mountains and rivers, in which ancient buildings and temples were built forming an 4000 meters long ancient alley.

Renowned for its palaces, temples and beautiful scenery, Anji is known for its distinct blend of Chengdu and Chongqing culture. To maintain their folklore cultural traditions, the city supports local residents who make local delicacies and handicrafts. Visitors can take part in these activities such as making rice dumplings and glutinous rick cakes throughout Anji.
