The construction of a demonstration sky-rail project kicked off in Xi'an, Shaanxi province on Sept 9 simultaneously with an agreement on a BYD 30GWh power battery project between the Xi'an government and BYD Company.

The monorail system will complete the city's three-dimensional comprehensive transportation system and relieve its traffic pressure.

Zhong Hongjiang, Party secretary of the Xi'an High-tech Industrial Development Zone, said at the ceremony that the demonstration project is a major industrial and ecological undertaking.

Meanwhile, the power battery program, with a total investment of 12 billion yuan ($1.75 billion), will also contribute to the city's green development.

BYD president Wang Chuanfu said that benefiting from the excellent urban and business environment, BYD has already laid out the automotive, electronic, new energy, rail transit and automotive finance industries in Xi'an.

"We will speed up the pace and strive to complete the projects as soon as possible, so as to further contribute to the city's development," Wang said.

"The High-tech Zone will strive to make the two programs models in aspects of hard technology industry, green development and ecological environmental protection," Zhong added.
