Built in 1759, Pianyan is famous for its charming buildings and streets, such as popular attractions like the Memorial Temple to King Yu the Great. In recent years, the town has held a number of summer cultural festivals from ones focusing on traditional Han clothing to ones spotlighting Chongqing cuisine.

As part of the development plan, Beibei district officials said the ancient town’s buildings and folk culture streets will undergo renovation. Once completed, Pianyan will host a number of cultural festivals including a temple fair, a folk art show and a gourmet food festival. In addition, more cultural elements, folk artistic performances and folk handicraft experiences will be introduced.

"The ancient town will be equipped with tourism public service supporting facilities, special restaurants, shops, inns and bars, offering sightseeing, leisure, entertainment and cultural experiences. Additionally, the outside region of the town will be developed with the functions of tourism service, cultural innovation and ecological residence," said the man in charge of Beibei district commission on tourism and development.
