Murals are an essential part of the Buddhism of Mount Wutai in Shanxi province, with a majority of the temples containing wall paintings, a great art legacy. The main subjects of the murals are Buddhist tales, often involving missionary work.

Wutai has accumulated its murals for hundreds of years, across many historical periods, with some typical works from the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), in the Eastern Hall of the Foguang Temple, the Jin Dynasty (1115 - 1234), in the Yanshan Temple, the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), in the Manjusri Hall of Foguang Temple, and one in the Youguo Temple from the Republic of China period (1912 - 1949).
