POWERCHINA helps develop Eurasian granary
Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), a professional hydropower construction company in China, has been in charge of several infrastructural projects in Sri Lanka that are expected to help the country become the Eurasian granary, according to a POWERCHINA representative.
There are eight member units of POWERCHINA in Sri Lanka, with a total staff of 1,741. Since its entry into Sri Lanka in 2003, POWERCHINA has completed eight local projects and are constructing three additional projects. It has four other signed projects that are awaiting a start date, said Wang Yu, representative of POWERCHINA in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan projects constructed by POWERCHINA will benefit the country and have a very good reputation among local residents.
For example, the Moragahakanda first reservoir hub (M Dam), known as the "Three Gorges Project in Sri Lanka," is the country's largest hydro-junction project ever.

It has connected the northern and central parts of Sri Lanka, and is expected to store rain for the dry season and divert waters in the central regions to the north. It has also upgraded the agricultural conditions for locals and protect them from droughts and other adverse natural conditions.
Another project, the Kaluganga reservoir head works (K Dam), is expected to solve local industrial and agricultural water use, as well as flood control problems. The K Dam diverts water for the M Dam power generation project, while increasing the irrigation capacity and water supply of central and south Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has the geographic advantage of connecting the Asian and African continents and is part of the sub-continent of South Asia. In the future, POWERCHINA will promote its efforts of becoming the Eurasian granary by helping it improve its infrastructure.
