An opening ceremony for Panama's water supply project, which aims to extend pipelines carrying the city's drinking water and expand water storage capability, took place in Panama on May 4, 2018.

At the ceremony, Panama's President Juan Carlos Varela announced groundbreaking of the project and spoke highly of Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), the project builder, for its excellent performance in the early stages.

POWERCHINA worked with Panama's company Consultores Profesionales de Ingeniería, S.A. (COPISA) to participate in the bid for the water supply project in April 2017 and won it in August.

POWERCHINA became the first Chinese enterprise to win a bid for a public facility in Panama since the establishment of China-Panama diplomatic relations. The project also marked a milestone for the company in tapping into the Panamanian market.

Over the last few years Panama has been suffering from aging drinking water pipes and insufficient water storage. Some eastern areas in Panama have been in short supply of drinking water and a majority of them maintain daily water supplies with rain.

The project is expected to benefit 800,000 Panama residents, upgrade the country's infrastructures, improve drinking water safety and promote locals' lives.
