POWERCHINA to build its first power project in Bangladesh

Updated: 2018-04-17 14:04

POWERCHINA and the Bangladesh Power Development Board signed an implementation agreement and a power purchase agreement for the Barishal 350 MW Coal Based Power Plant on April 12.

The documents were witnessed by Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Affairs in the Prime Minister's Office, and Dr Ahmad Kaikaus, Bangladesh Power secretary.

Bangladesh is an important player involved in the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Bangladesh-India-Burma economic corridor. With the leadership and overall planning of POWERCHINA, the project team quickly figured out the development potential of the project in the Bangladeshi market and continuously followed up and promoted the development of many power projects.

In face of various difficulties like fierce competition, complicated approval processes and a shortage of land resources, the project team made concerted efforts and gained the land development right necessary for the Barishal 350 MW Coal Based Power Plant in July 2017, an important step for the first power project of POWERCHINA in Bangladesh.

Soon afterwards, the project team went through formalities and gained the necessary paperwork for approval and began negotiations with relevant Bangladeshi authorities. Finally both parties came to an agreement.

The Barishal project will further deepen the long-standing friendship between China and Bangladesh and have a profound impact on relieving power shortages, optimizing investment environments, promoting infrastructure construction and improving people's livelihoods. In addition, it will lay the foundation for further development of POWERCHINA in Bangladesh and increase its influence in the country's power industry.
