On March 3, Wang Nengjun, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, told reporters he approved of Dejiang county's efforts to grow the industry around gastrodia elata, a herb used in traditional Chinese medicine.
"Dejiang county, Tongren, of Guizhou province has continuously increased the ecological protection of the county to create a good environment for gastrodia elata growth," he said.

According to a sampling test conducted by the Guizhou Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision, the gastrodin level of Dejiang gastrodia elata is as high as 0.36 to 1.3 percent, which is much higher than the national standard of 0.22 percent.
Wang said that Dejiang county has long listed the herb as one of its poverty alleviation industries, and have introduced a series of supporting policies.
"On May 29, 2007, the authority approved Dejiang gastrodia elata as a geographical indication product. It is believed the herb will help more local farmers out of poverty," said Wang.
