Shi Huifen: special needs students need more care

Updated: 2019-03-01

"Children with special needs need more social care and help," said Shi Huifen, deputy to the National People's Congress (NPC) and teacher at a special education school in Wuchuan Gelao and Miao autonomous county, Zunyi city, Guizhou province.

In 2018, Shi was elected as an NPC deputy. She put forward a proposal to "focus on the employment of disabled students".

Shi's proposal was supported and adopted by the relevant departments. A beverage store and book store later opened, providing support for eight disabled students and helping them integrate into society.

In 2019, Shi focused her attention on children with autism. During her visit, Shi learned that economic and emotional pressure are the biggest problems facing the treatment of autism, and many families were poor as a result.

At the 13th NPC, Shi will propose that medical insurance should include the funds needed for rehabilitation training for autistic children.
