A symposium focusing on the modern coal chemical industry and New Generation Coal to Ethylene Glycol (NCTEG) technology was held in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou province, on Sept 9.

The 1,000-ton NCTEG technology, independently developed by the Fujian Institute of Structure Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, successfully met requirements, as announced by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation at the symposium.

It is reported that the new technology applied in Xingren county, Guizhou province will contribute to the ethylene glycol project, with an annual output of 600,000 tons.

According to Li Shousheng, president of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, the traditional petro ethylene to ethylene glycol method doesn’t meet chemical requirements. So the NCTEG technology, with its high economic benefits, is attracting much attention in China's coal chemical industry.

After over 30 years of research and development, the first generation of coal to ethylene glycol technology finally achieved industrialization. Meanwhile, the completion of the world’s first 200,000-ton coal to ethylene glycol plant in 2009 has led the development of coal to ethylene glycol technology.

According to Yao Yuangen, researcher at the Fujian Institute of Structure Research, NCTEG technology is the most advanced in the world, being granted 15 patents and applying for 52 national invention patents.

In order to realize the industrialization of NCTEG technology, the ethylene glycol project, with an annual output of 600,000 tons, began in Xingren county in 2016. Relying on the abundant coal resources of Xingren, the Fujian Institute of Structure Research will build a new coal chemical technology R&D center to make the county a coal chemical demonstration park in Southwest China.
