To honor the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), a retired veteran from Kaili, Guizhou province, held an exhibition of military memorabilia at his home on Aug 1.

In a cramped area of less than 20 square meters, Yu Zhihua, 87, showcased his various collections of photographs, models, books, badges and his own calligraphy writing works.

"I began preparing the exhibition from April," said Yu. "I spent about 4,000 yuan ($595) but I think it's worth it."

Yu's ancestral home was in Shaoyang, a city 165.7 km away from Mao Zedong's birthplace in Hunan province. In the 1920s, his family joined the revolution and moved to Guizhou province.

Yu is very proud that his family has cultivated eight soldiers, all of whom have attended many major revolutions and battles. “We have participated in many historical events since 1927," Yu said.

His own experiences during the war years inspired him to organize such an exhibition, and Yu hopes to share with more people the difficult days that Chinese troops went through and promote the red culture.
