Cai Qun, a Miao deputy to the National People’s Congress (NPC), founded an enterprise selling Miao embroideries and batiks in Dazhai village, Guizhou province several years ago. The rural enterprise put an end to the days when female villagers had to travel hundreds of kilometers away from their families for work.

Decades ago, poverty uprooted residents in Dazhai village and drove them to far away cities to earn a living. “Women had to leave children behind for work. Sometimes it would be a year before mothers came back. Some couples even had to live apart because of work,” said Cai Qun.

Supported by relative policies, Cai’s enterprise has expanded its scale, turning over 8 million yuan last year. Thanks to a newly built primary school in Dazhai village, female residents can give consideration to both family and work.

“You can experience the procedures for creating Miao embroideries and batiks in this interactive augmented reality (AR) video. All it takes is to scan a QR code,” said Cai Qun, giving a presentation at the Guizhou NPC Deputies Delegation. Cai seeks to popularized Miao embroidery through AR to cater to the young.

Cai Qun has appealed for further national policies to motivate small rural business and provide more nonagricultural employment opportunities in impoverished villages.
