The Miao ethnic group in Kaiyang county held its traditional Bullfight Festival on Feb 21, where bulls from different villages showed their strength in battle.

The Miao people hold bulls in high regard as a symbol of energy, health, industry and heroism in their culture.

The festival in Kaiyan can be tracked back several hundreds of years, and is usually held on the fifth, fifteenth and twenty-fifth day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar.

On Feb 21, Kaiyang’s 14,000-square-meter bullring was crowded with more than 15,000 audience members. The bulls fought with competitors to the sound of a great amount of applause.
