The spectacular ancient ruins of Hailong town are a sight to behold; that is, if you’re brave enough to get to them. Perched high up on Longyang Mountain in Zunyi city, Guizhou province, the ruins made in onto the World Heritage List in 2015.

The town’s only access is via a narrow traverse on the north side of the mountain, which rises above the Xiangjiang River.

Originally founded in 1257 of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), Hailong town was ruled by the Yang family for hundreds of years. The family followed the system of appointing national minority hereditary headmen. Local residents still living in the surrounding area mainly associate themselves with the Gelao and Miao ethnic groups.

Large parts of the ruins are well preserved at the breathtaking site, making for an unforgettable insight into the culture, history, architecture and social life in Southwest China during the Song and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties.
