Jianhe county, Guizhou province, 210 kilometers from the provincial capital Guiyang, was struck by a magnitude-5.5 earthquake at 9.47am, on March 30, according to China's Earthquake Administration.

There was a power outage in the town of Nanjia, where the quake was most strongly felt and pavement was buckled and walls cracked in some villages, with one woman slightly injured by falling tiles, who was been sent to hospital, but —with no serious problem.

He Yang, deputy secretary-general of the local government, explained,"Most of the houses are earthquake-resistant so, our biggest concern now is the risk of landslides triggered by the earthquake."

The railway bureau of the city of Chengdu,Sichuan province, to the north of the quake zone, said that railways, including Guiyang-Guangzhou, Guangdong province high-speed railway, were not affected.

The Earthquake Administration has announced a Level-III emergency and has sent earthquake and rescue teams to the stricken county, which has experienced two other earthquakes of magnitude 1.8 and 3.3 in the past two years. The county, which lies on the Songtao-Dushan fault zone, is known for its abundance of hot springs.
