A new medical insurance policy implemented on January 1 will benefit many families in Guiyang, Southwest China's Guizhou province, that have newborns with congenital diseases.

Before, families with newborns suffering from congenital diseases in Guiyang could not enjoy medical insurance immediately after payment, but it has to wait for another one working day, according to the Guiyang human resources and social security bureau.

With the new policy, newborns can immediately enjoy medical insurance like adults, as long as their families purchase the plan within 90 days after the child is born.

For families who fail to buy medical insurance for their babies within 90 days, they may have a "waiting period" of six months. Medical insurance is still available for newborns on the next day after the "waiting period."
