Owners of 12 illegal rooftop buildings in Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province, have agreed to remove the structures, according to the local authorities.

However, the details of the demolitions are still being discussed, said a director named Xu with the urban patrol officers bureau of Nanming district.

If the owners cooperate, the structures could be demolished within three months.

Ranging from 180 to 240 square meters, most of the rooftop structures are three-story buildings erected more than five years ago on top of two 28-story residential buildings in a community named City Garden.

Local authorities, including the district urban patrol officers bureau and construction bureau, reached an agreement with the owners of the 12 buildings on Aug 23, Xu said.

Si Jun, one of the owners, said the extra building was intended to prevent theft, which has occurred twice since he moved to City Garden.

"I have no intention to break any law. If the authorities request that I remove the construction, I'm fine with that," he said.
