No scientific basis for recent "earthquake" rumor
Updated: 2010-08-12

According to Fujian Seismological Bureau website, rumors on the internet that an earthquake will happen in Fuzhou, Quanzhou and other places on August 8 to 13 has caused some panic.

Pushu, the Director in the Forecast Center of Fujian Seismological Bureau, and also a Senior Engineer, said that it was purely earthquake rumors without any scientific basis in saying that "an earthquake will happen in Fuzhou, Quanzhou and other places on August 8 to 13".

Pushu indicated several points: Firstly, geologically, the land in Fujian province had no tectonic setting; secondly, according to the data analysis from seismic network in Fujian province, no anomalies appeared in recent seismic activity and precursory observation of Fujian province; thirdly, Macro-seismic observation network in Fujian province found no macroscopic abnormality. Pushu also expressed that the general public should maintain stability instead of believing the earthquake rumors.
