FUZHOU - Wang Yincheng, former president of the People's Insurance Co (Group) of China, was sentenced to prison for 11 years on Thursday for accepting bribes of more than 8.7 million yuan ($1.36 million).

Wang pleaded guilty and said he would not appeal the conviction.

His illegal gains will be recovered and handed over to the national treasury. He was also fined 1 million yuan, according to a statement by the Intermediate People's Court in Fuzhou, Fujian province.

The court found that between 2006 and 2016, Wang took advantage of his positions at the company and its subsidiary to seek illegal benefits through helping others obtain contracts, secure promotions or get jobs.

Wang accepted gifts and money worth more than 8.7 million yuan, either directly or through relatives, the statement said.

It said the court in its sentencing considered the fact that Wang confessed to his crimes, showed repentance and was cooperative in returning all his illegal gains.

Wang was placed under investigation for "suspected serious disciplinary violation" by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection in February 2017.

In another case, Yu Haiyan, 57, former vice-governor of Gansu province, stood trial in Chongqing Municipal No 1 Intermediate People's Court on Thursday on charge of taking bribes.

He was charged with abusing power to receive bribes of more than 65 million yuan ($10 million) from 1998 to 2016.

Yu pleaded guilty. The court will deliver a verdict later.
