Fujian received more than 11 million visitors during the May Day holiday that ended on Tuesday, with tourism revenue topping 8 billion yuan ($1.26 billion), up 21.8 percent and 30.4 percent respectively from a year earlier, local media reported.

On top of tours around major cities, the eco-tours to countryside and seaside, as well as some culture-themed ones were highlights this year.

A dazzling array of activities, focused on local delicacies, culture and folk arts, were held across the province to beckon visitors.

Xiamen, a port city in Fujian, is still one of the hottest tourism destinations during the three-day holiday.

On LY.com and Ctrip.com, China's online travel agencies, the city posted the second and third place respectively among cities nationwide.

Other seaside cities in the province also saw a tourism boom over the period, owing to people's increasing fondness for seaside scenes, which include Pingtan and Putian.

Meanwhile, more tourists chose to enjoy self-driving with families or friends over short-and medium distances.

A sample survey showed that roughly 93.1 percent of tourists to Fujian travelled with families or friends while 55.3 percent went on a self-driving tour for the May Day holiday.

Visitors were mainly from Fujian itself as well as neighboring provinces such as Guangdong, Zhejiang and Jiangxi.
