To better manage its bodies of water and treat river pollution, river chiefs in Fu'an, East China's Fujian province are now using a smart system to help them achieve their environmental goals, local media reported on April 8.

As one of the 320 village level river chiefs in Fuan, Chen Shaoxi turns on the "smart river chief" app before starting work every day. “The app records my working hours, tracks my patrols along the rivers and sends the information to the management center,” said Chen.

By using the app, which was launched in September 2017, local residents can also take photos and report pollution directly to the river chiefs.

Through the smart system, which combines geographic information, cloud computing, the internet of things and landscape data, Fuan is now achieving a better level of supervision and management of its rivers.
