Liyuanfu, a dance drama, based on a classic play of the Liyuan Opera, was staged in Quanzhou, Fujian province Saturday night.
Liyuan Opera, which originates in Song Dynasty (960-1279), is an ancient opera genre prevalent in the southern part of the country and features singing in the dialects of Quanzhou and Chaozhou.
The drama, adapted from the play, The Tale of the Lychee Mirror or Chen San Wu Niang, integrates the styles of dance, opera and poem, and is designed to showcase the charm of the local ancient opera in a modernized way.
The Tale of the Lychee Mirror, tells the romance happened between Chen San, a scholar and Wu Niang, and depicts the great aspiration and courage to fight for the freedom of marriage in a feudal society.
