Fuzhou, capital of Southeast China's Fujian province, aims to develop its Fuzhou New District as an important supporting region for cross-Straits exchanges and cooperation by the year 2020.

As the 14th national development area to be created, Fuzhou New District covers 800 square kilometers, and enjoys geological and cultural advantages in enhancing exchanges with Taiwan.

"The construction and development across the Straits should become the vital component of the three sections' development plan. In addition, the development of Fuzhou New District is conducive to incorporating Fuzhou into China's Belt and Road initiative, as well as boosting the development of China's southeast coastal areas," said Fan Hengshan, deputy secretary general of the National Development and Reform Commission, at a Fuzhou New District development forum in Beijing on Monday.
