With an investment of 5.705 billion yuan, the second undersea tunnel linking Xiamen Island and Haicang District is expected to be put into service in 2019, according to the Xiamen Municipal Development and Reform Commission.
The construction of the undersea project – The Second West Channel – will start by the end of 2015. The total length of the channel will reach 7.1 kilometers, including the undersea tunnel's 6.335 kilometers. The tunnel was designed to have 6 lanes and a planned speed limit of 80 km/h.
The west-east channel will start at the intersection of Haicang Avenue and Maqing Road in Haicang District, and go under the sea at the intersection of Haicang Avenue and Yongjun Road, reaching land near the No. 14 Berth at Xiangyu Pier on Xiamen Island, and ending at Huoju Bei Road.
The channel will be connected to Chenggong Avenue, Fangzhong Road and the planned "Second East Channel". The new channel is expected to ease traffic pressure on Haicang Bridge, the busiest bridge in Xiamen.
