An H7N9-infected patient in Xiamen has fully recovered after a one-month treatment, and he was discharged from hospital on May 8.

The patient, surnamed Wu, was diagnosed with H7N9 on March 27 and was transferred to the ICU of the Xiamen First Hospital on March 28. Considering the critical condition Wu was in, doctors of the Xiamen First Hospital used ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) equipment to conduct a cardiopulmonary respiratory bypass. But Wu weights 110 kilograms, and his subcutaneous fat is as thick as 5 centimeters, so it was very hard for the doctors to insert the tube into his vessel. The doctors had to cut an opening on his leg to put the catheter in.

Breathing with the help of an artificial lung for 17 days, and nursed round-the-clock by more than 20 doctors and nurses for more than 1 month, Wu finally fully recovered and was discharged from hospital on May 8.
