Earth Hour started at 20:30 and lasted for an hour. The theme of this year’s Earth Hour is “For the Blue Sky”, which focuses on raising awareness of air pollution.

On March 28th, the last Saturday of March this year, many landmark buildings, businesses and communities in Xiamen joined to observe annual Earth Hour, which has been celebrated in Xiamen for the last 8 years.

Earth Hour started at 20:30 and lasted for an hour. The theme of this year’s Earth Hour is “For the Blue Sky”, which focuses on raising awareness of air pollution.

The Xiang’an campus of Xiamen University saw a blackout in over half of its dorms, which was carried out voluntarily by its students, and interesting nighttime activities were held on the campus grounds.

Landscape lamps of the BRT bus routes and Gulangyu Island were switched off as well.

Xiamen officially signed up to support Earth Hour for the first time in 2010, arousing a lot of public attention. Hotels and shopping malls in the city have actively gotten involved in the campaign via various activities in the years since, and citizens voluntarily switch off lights at home and turn off mobile phones in support of energy-saving efforts and the prevention of global warming on the day each year.

Initiated by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) in 2007, Earth Hour is the world's largest environmental movement which encourages individuals, businesses and communities worldwide to turn off their lights for one hour on the last Saturday of March in a bid to raise awareness on climate change.
