An elderly woman from Longyan city received a letter from US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle congratulating her on her 90th birthday, Strait News reported, citing an official source.

The woman, Lu Xiulu, was born in Chendong village in Chendong township, Yongding county, and emigrated to the US with her husband, according to a local government staffer surnamed Ma.

News of the Obama letter was revealed via an email from Jiang Lisan, founder of an overseas Chinese association in San Francisco, he added.

In the letter the Obamas began with "happy 90th birthday" greetings for Lu, who was referred to as Mrs Ah-Lock Law Kong. The Obamas then spoke highly of her family's contribution to US development and wished her well.

The main reason for Lu receiving the letter is, according to Ma, that her grandson is involved with American politics. But Ma said he couldn't identify him nor reach the informant, Mr Jiang.
