Fujian to speed up ecological conservation

Fujian province will accelerate construction of a demonstration zone of ecological culture, according to an annual government work report delivered by Fujian Governor Su Shulin on Jan 28.

The measures, in general, will include energy conservation, emission cut, contamination control and eco-system protection.

Environmental protection authority will step up supervision on major environmental problems across the province by making inspection and reports on a quarterly basis.

Lands will be used more efficiently. Underground spaces are encouraged to be exploited, and the arable land and water resources will under better protection, said Su.

Fujian will upgrade sewage treatment facilities, step up air pollution monitoring and alert system, advocate clean energy and eliminate old automobiles which fail to meet emission standards. Polluting enterprises will be required to improve production modes to lessen contamination and any breach of environmental laws and regulation will be severely dealt with.

In addition, Fujian plans to complete an afforestation plan covering 1.5 million mu (100,000 hectares). A mechanism to avoid water loss and soil erosion will be set up. Fujian will take up more measures to protect its landscape resources including ocean, beach, wetland and uninhabited sea islands.
