The Chinese mainland will work to maintain a stable situation across the Taiwan Strait and contain "Taiwan independence" activities, according to the top political advisor Tuesday.

"We will fully implement the principles and policies decided by the central leadership on Taiwan affairs, befriend Taiwan compatriots ... push forward the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, create favorable conditions to settle the Taiwan issue and realize the reunification of the motherland," said Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference at an annual meeting of central and local officials in charge of Taiwan affairs.

In the past year, the central leadership has updated policies based on the current cross-strait situation, and Taiwan affairs departments have effectively implemented them, leading to notable progress in cross-strait relations, Yu said.

The mainland will work to enhance political mutual trust and maintain favorable exchanges with the island based on adherence to the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence," said a statement issued after the meeting.

The mainland will actively push forward follow-up talks of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), a cross-strait economic pact signed in 2010, the statement said.

It will work for closer economic relations across the Taiwan Strait, including industrial and financial cooperation, and try to benefit as many small businesses, farmers and fishermen as possible.

More measures will be adopted to facilitate exchanges across the strait, especially between young people from the two sides.

The mainland will step up judicial cooperation with Taiwan so as to protect the legal rights and interests of Taiwanese living in the mainland.
