The event happened at about 2:00pm on December 15. The 35-year-old man, Zhang, drove his red-colored car to the East Hexiang Gas Station and filled up a bottle of gasoline when no one was paying attention, and then stopped his car at the door of the gas station’s convenience store. Witnesses reported that he then opened the bottle and poured the gasoline on himself and his car.

Frightened citizens nearby quickly fled for their lives, and staff at the gas station called 110 immediately. According to one witness, Zhang kept mumbling “I want to see the leader” while he was pouring the gasoline around. He stayed at the gas station for about 5 minutes and then drove away, heading down West Hexiang Road.

Xiamen police, a fire brigade, and a special police unit were dispatched immediately to chase Zhang and finally caught him near the Hexiang Mall, 1.8 kilometers from the gas station.

According to the police, Zhang has a history of drug abuse and tested positive for drugs after a urine test at the police station. The incident is still being investigated.
