The brick house, about 70 square meters, was situated atop the toilet along Chengzhi Street in Gulou District and had been there for nearly two decades. It had fine accommodation and a full set of appliances, and even had a small garden outside.

The owner of the illicit structure is a retired cleaning worker. He admitted that he built the house in 1996 to meet his growing household. Now, the place houses 8 people.

Chenguan, or city management staff, who tore the dwelling down, said they will beef up their examination of illegal houses in future.
