Persistent heavy rains and floods dealt a heavy blow to Fujian province in the first half of 2014, resulting in an economic loss of up to 2.7 billion yuan ($436.3 million).

15 rounds of downpours, most of which occurred in May and June brought a rainfall of 1,139 mm to Fujian, 13 percent higher than the normal level, triggering water to rise in many rivers, said the provincial Flood Control Office on June 30.

More than 765,600 people in 75 counties and cities were affected by the disasters, which also toppled 110,000 houses and damaged crops in 83,000 hectares, it added.

Fujian, especially the central and northern regions, is likely to endure a dry summer from July to Sept, and a rainy fall from Oct to Dec, with high odds of floods returning.

Experts also predicted there will be around six typhoons landing or affecting Fujian in the second half of the year.
