Weng Wuqing, 17, fell forward suddenly when sitting down in class. He was immediately sent to the township health center. Emergency rescue efforts got his heart beating again but consciousness has not returned.
After several days’ observation in a hospital, Weng was diagnosed with Q-T syndrome, or atrial fibrillation, a rare heart disease.
According to the doctors, Weng needs to have a defibrillator installed in his chest, which will be replaced every five years. Moreover, the first operation will cost a minimum of 130,000 yuan.
When visiting Weng’s home, his classmates were shocked by this lively and cheerful boy’s family situation: grandparents in their 70s, a vegetative father lying in bed, an older sister still in school, and his mother, the only working member of the family, all living together in poor conditions.
To carry Weng through the difficulty, teachers, students, relatives and friends spontaneously contributed. Some even call on acquaintances to offer financial assistance, through WeChat, Qzone and other social networking services.
As of May 27, the donations, raised by the staff and students in the school, civil organizations, and other good-hearted people at home and abroad, had reached 310,000 yuan.
