Since the establishment of Dehong Prefecture in 1953, the Dehong Government has attached great importance to the development of science and technology. In 2000, an official document was issued to reinforce the status “science and technology innovation” as a prefectural development strategy.

Later on, Dehong continued to push forward science and technology innovation across the Prefecture and increased expenditures on science and technology.

From 2000 to 2005, Dehong accomplished a number of scientific and technological achievements.

Firstly, 93 science and technology programs with a total investment of 10.6 billion yuan were carried out, among which 7 were national programs, 34 were provincial programs, and 52 were prefectural programs. Most of the programs were closely related to new industries and key industries.

Secondly, 148 science and technology projects won awards, one of which was awarded by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture. Some of the awarded projects are closely related to people who lived in Dehong. For example, the outcome of a debris controlling project protected tens of thousand of people and their properties in 9 towns and villages.

Thirdly, a large number of technicians were trained, especially in the field of agriculture. 15,199 people were sent to study in agriculture institutes. 61 agriculture technology stations with 1356 technicians were set up to help solve different problems encountered by local farmers.

Fourthly, 38 scientific and technologic patents were approved.

Fifthly, the project to promote awareness of science and technology among Dehong people is steadily progressing. 1680 lectures and 105 exhibitions were held with an audience of 650,000 people. 5,160,000 technical manuals were distributed for free.

So far science and technology innovation has become a major driving force for the economic and social development of Dehong.
